I was a young child in the mid 1940’s to mid 1950’s and spent the summers barefoot almost all of the time and that was normal for most children who lived in rural areas and smaller towns. The summers I was 7 and again when I was 8 I never wore shoes from the day school ended until a few day before school in September. I never had a serious injury from going barefoot as your feet adapt very quickly.

This posting made me realize I haven't put shoes on for about three days. As for the kids (now young adults) they only wore shoes in the summer when forced. As adults they are about the same but mature enough now to understand you need to wear shoes to church.

My younger sister was very like that as a child, regularly going without shoes and socks outside. She has passed on those good habits to her own children.

Our kids are grown now, but growing up, they went barefoot all summer long and usually nude unless we had to go somewhere. They would start as early in the spring as possible, and push it as deep into the fall as was comfortable. I'm still the same way. I'm barefoot probably 95% of the time during the summer.

The sand and pavement can get pretty hot here in Florida, so we always wear at least sandals or flip flops. Other reason is people spit and dogs poop, and who wants that between their toes.
