Always wondered if girls 'pick up' other girls just out and about ?

I don't mean at the meat factories (bars/clubs/etc.). Like just when doing day to day stuff? Does it work the same as when a guy is supposed to see a girl he likes and needs to stump up the nerve to say hello?
