I prefer the rotary cutters of number 1, #2 has a reciprocating system that seems intent on pulling whiskers out by the roots instead of cutting them flush. The cutters of #1 are floating and will adapt to curves better than the straight "bar" across the top of the Braun. The wet or dry feature is great too. With a little soap and water, I get less razor burn and a better shave.

Philips and Braun both are good brands. Personally I like Philips.
As someone mentioned, good to have wet option. Makes shaving smooth and easy on skin.
Before deciding, think how he will use it. Do he keep beard and like to trim? Then there are other options you should look.

The Braun...the shape of the head is better for the curves of the face.
