The boss was asking for trouble and shouldn’t have dipped his "pen" in the "company ink", to use an old saying. If your friend slept with him with the sole intent to get promoted, and wouldn’t have chosen him otherwise…well. Under any other circumstances, trading sex for benefit, whether it’s cash, housing or a promotion, is generally defined as prostitution. Not a judgment call. A dear friend is a well-respected doctor because as his mistress, she let a much older man pay her medical school tuition. But it is what it is.
