The Enlightenment was when the Scientific Method idea developed. Of course, discoveries and inventions occurred throughout early civilization.

It’s not surprising. Many clergy ended up in small , remote villages with little to do . Some spent their time watching the night sky. And began charting positions of the stars and movements in the night sky. They also had greater access to books. And were generally better educated. They also had plenty of time to experiment.
Atheist are not scientists because they lack belief in god, they are simply looking for answers other than “god did it”
Atheist or theist, true scientist will follow the evidence and present the facts as is.
