C S Lewis on atheism

“Atheism turns out to be too simple. If the whole universe has no meaning, we should never have found out that it has no meaning: just as, if there were no light in the universe and therefore no creatures with eyes, we should never know it was dark. Dark would be without meaning.”

C. S. Lewis

Life can still have meaning even if there is no objective meaning to existence.

No logical meaning of course. As an atheist you come from nothing and I’m going to nothing and there’s no point in being here@BohemianBabe

@Mathers You must have a really sad existence if you believe there's no reason to live. Is that why you need an imaginary friend?
@Mathers We have the abillity to create our own meaning. Why do you need an authoritative figure to tell you yours?
@Mathers That means we get to make our own meaning.
Mathers · 61-69
Which is ?@BohemianBabe
@Mathers Whatever you want.
Mathers · 61-69
So Hitler and Stalin were actually OK?@BohemianBabe
@Mathers To me, no, because they made the world a worse place.
By the way, I think it's really weird that people think you need to believe in a god to have values. Like, if it was confirmed that there is no god, would you be alright with mass murder?
Mathers · 61-69
Yes but if you take God out of the picture and you say any man can do what he likes then you have to put up with a mass murder@BohemianBabe
@Mathers No, we can still say certain things are bad for society. Something doesn't have to be objectively morally wrong to still go against our values.

But that is not Christianity@Sharon
Sharon · F
@Mathers That's the whole basis of christianity.
Mathers · 61-69
How would you know?@Sharon
@Mathers All of the major forms of Christianity have Heaven and Hell. So yes, Christianity does rely on punishment and reward. Same goes for Islam, Hinduism, and most other religions.
Mathers · 61-69
Christianity has justice at the root of it. I don’t suppose you believe in justice@BohemianBabe
@Mathers Christian judgment has nothing to do with justice. Justice is nothing black and white it's complex.
@Mathers So you agree. Christianity is about fear of punishment and the hope for a reward.
Mathers · 61-69
Not at all. It is about a relationship with God as Father@BohemianBabe
@Mathers And what is the point of wanting that relationship?
Sharon · F
@Mathers
How would you know?
I used to be a christian, but then I read the bible.
Mathers · 61-69
Then you would have been reinforced in your faith @Sharon
Sharon · F
@Mathers Quite the opposite. By reading the bible I was able to see that it was all BS, that's why I became an Atheist. The road to Atheism is littered with well read bibles.
Mathers · 61-69
I find you a very sad and bitter person@Sharon
Sharon · F
@Mathers LOL. Nothing like as sad and bitter as you. I almost feel sorry for you.
