How and why a human become an atheist

I am certain God exists, but I need to know how and why atheists become atheistic.

So, paging any atheist, please explain how and why you become an atheist, that will motivate me to know God better.

A college level philosophy class did it for me. I had loose ideas but this class helped me piece them together. The class was taught at a state school by a Catholic monk.
