I Am An Atheist

NEVER tell your religious parent(s) that you're an atheist, or you'll be judged and argued with so much.

On a serious note, the other day, I told my mom that I was an atheist and me and her got into a huge science vs religion debate, especially since the pope touched down on the United States.

It's amusing, yet, another term that's indescribable at the same time due to the amount of braincells I lost.

What is interesting about that is the pope is a trained chemist and believes in science including evolution

I think it was unconstitutional for him to talk to the senate (I'm a Brit so I might be wrong).

As for the speech, on climate change & ending the death penalty right, on abortion and gay marriage wrong.

He has also said atheists can go to heaven, which is a win win if ever there was one.

Jorge Bergoglio studied chemistry and worked in chemistry prior to entering the seminary, but he never graduated from any university, let alone with a Masters.
He graduated with a título in chemistry from the Escuela Técnica Industrial No. 12, which is a state-run technical secondary school (for American readers, a 'título' is something like a certificate from a community college in the U.S.).
Finding his religion increasingly marginalised and irrelevant, he says that he now accepts evolution (as if it's in any way relevant whether or not he accepts it), but what most folk missed is that he excluded humans from the evolutionary process.
He has to do that, because if humans evolved, then Adam and Eve are acknowledged to be fictional, and therefore original sin is fictional... and the entire christian religion collapses (remember, the basis of all religions is that humans are somehow flawed, or lacking, or needy, and only this or that particular religion can ameliorate the supposed flaw or lack or need)

Omg so much knowledge, so many flaws! The thought that someone could exclude humans from the evolutionary process! Haha what does he say about transitional species/fossils found? Crazy pope. Should definitely not be speaking to the senate but then he basically is a world leader if you've got a billion Catholics under your belt
Humanist321
It was not unconstitutional. Heads of state are often invited to speak. It was not to senate. It was to full Congress of both houses.

Otherwise I agree with you.

I stand corrected. Like I said I'm British and by no means an expert on the U.S. Constitution. He is a head if state of course. Though the definition is really pushing the envelope. Would the prince of Monaco get to address full congress I wonder...
Humanist321
Support your statement that he excludes humans from the evolutionary process. Maybe but I have not heard that.

Many Jesuits and Holy Cross Fathers are supporters of science. Unlike parish clergy who live in medieval world.

Are you familiar with Teilhard de Chardin?

The Holy Roman Emperor has no flaws. He is immaculate, and his voice is the voice of God. :-)

See comment above.

Btw in case you did not check I am a non theist and a humanist. I just give credit where it is due.

Hi curmudgeon just to say you may enjoy the debate between Richard Dawkins and Rowan Williams (former Archbishop of Canterbury). Both are professors in their own subjects at Oxford University (where the debate is held).

Watching them debate is fascinating. Particularly the philosophical theological angle taken by Williams, who accepts evolution and the Big Bang, which fascinated me but didn't change my outlook.

It's on YouTube.
