What you saw was probably no larger than a walnut. Mostly they are specs of space dust, no bigger than grains of sand.
I track meteor showers and try to be there. The Perseids are on now, and will peak overnight Wednesday-Thursday. Should be clear skies for us in the Northwestern USA.

@morrgin The moon is in its Waxing Crescent Phase, which is the first phase after the new moon. This means 10% illumination and a moonset of roughly 10:30PM. So, if you're along the coast, with little to no light pollution, you should be able to look up (maybe not even look up, just look out toward the sky), from about 12:30AM to about 4:40AM and see hundreds of meteors streak per hour.
