My brother his daughter and I were travelling to Mom's for Christmas. it was the 23rd, forget the year. Since it was going to be mid 40's Celsius and his car had no aircon we chose to drive through the night to make the 800km journey.
Apart from seeing numerous kangaroos standing on the side of the road looking like The walking dead extras, What looked like a Train by its lights that vanished into nothing. We saw a beg right light coming down. As it arced across the sky it turned to bright green and the white before it disappeared from sight. We discovered awhile later that it had been a comet the landed in the sea.

What you saw was probably no larger than a walnut. Mostly they are specs of space dust, no bigger than grains of sand.
I track meteor showers and try to be there. The Perseids are on now, and will peak overnight Wednesday-Thursday. Should be clear skies for us in the Northwestern USA.

@morrgin The moon is in its Waxing Crescent Phase, which is the first phase after the new moon. This means 10% illumination and a moonset of roughly 10:30PM. So, if you're along the coast, with little to no light pollution, you should be able to look up (maybe not even look up, just look out toward the sky), from about 12:30AM to about 4:40AM and see hundreds of meteors streak per hour.
I don't think smoke from the fires has reached the coast. I should be on the Washington Coast.

I’ve actively gone looking for them; especially during known meteor showers. Never got to see one though. So neat that you did.
