What is the Hedda Stone

This curious object is AngloSaxan carving. Pretty unique. But what does it represent. It lurks in Peterborough cathedral.

It may be as early as 570AD.
Though recent research suggests it’s much later 870AD
Various claims have been made. Again the most recent is it depicts twelve monks who were slaughtered.
Who know?

Much older than Peterborough cathedral though.
