Vincent van Gogh

Today is the anniversary of the death of Vincent van Gogh in 1890. He was one of a kind, and I don’t know if there are any other artists whose work benefits so much from being seen person. The paint on his canvases is so thick it is literally three dimensional. You can see the brushstrokes so you may think you understand the technique, until you realize it is utterly unreproducible. I’ve seen paintings of his in museums throughout the US, as well as in a few other countries. It is a dream of mine to go to the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam.

It’s hard to pick just a few favorites, so I’ll just share a few I’ve seen in person. If you ever have the chance to spend time with his work face-to-face, don’t miss it!

Nice yes 🙂‍↕
I lovehis work
One of my favorites

I loved the exibition that was a few years ago in Philly ...it literally brought tears to my eyes ...it was moving and beautiful
I have really come to appreciate his work over the years. My absolute favorite is Café Terrace at Night. If I ever make it back to France, I want to visit Arles, where it was painted.

@0uijaFinger A small but astonishing painting. I think I stood in front of it for 30 minutes. It’s in the Met in NYC.

I'm excited to go the the Musee d'Orsay later this year and see several of his works. I love Van Gogh and have a print of Starry Night in my bedroom. I'm reading The Parisian Heist at the moment which includes quite a bit about Van Gogh.

@ChampagneOnIce the architecture alone is worth the visit.

@samueltyler2 Yes! I've been to the Louvre, but this trip I really want to go to the Musée d'Orsay.

@ChampagneOnIce it is a bit of a hike from other sites. But, it is worth the trip. We are going back to Paris next spring. We want to get to Notre Dame as well. The last time we were there she still gad her scaffolding, and it was snowing!
