Favourites

Berthe Morisot, and Mary Cassat are among my favourite painters. Of course I like Van Gogh, Manet, Monet, Degas, Courbet, and countless others of the movement, Cezanne, Pissarro, Braque, and so many others, Matisse! They have made a new fabric in our society, which the next generations are still impacting on.

Morisot and Cassat are brilliant and, I think, under appreciated. I’d add Piet Mondrian to your list, although he’s a bit later. It’s fascinating how he evolved over time. MOMA in NYC used to have a whole room devoted to Mondrian, from his early landscapes to his late abstractions that he’s famous for. I thought it was fascinating how his obsession with grids was visible even in his more traditional early work.
