Do any battery tool brands have interchangable batteries with standard connection layouts?

ie. is it possible to say have a few different battery tool brands based on one's requirements but be able charge and use the battery modules (same voltage of course) interchangably?

I currently have 18v dewalt stuff but I'm a bit miffed at the poor quality of all the Chinese-made 'skins' (ie. the tools without a battery plugged in). I suspect nearly all battery tool brands are the same (made in China - ultra-cheap) with the 'value' being in genuine batteries.

I note there is a big market for fake knock-off copycat batteries.

Anyway, why is there not an industry standard connection and charging arrangement for 18 v battery tool batteries? Or perhaps there is.

No standard because each manufacturer wants you to buy all the tools and batteries only from it, but it is a nuisance.

The EU found it hard enough to standardise on chargers and charging sockets for small things like 'phones, so trying to standardise large power tools may be next to impossible.
I think that there are fewer differences now between the footprints of different batteries, but I think you are right.
