Sometimes I know what I'm talking about

Had to call in to apartment maintenance that the fans on my AC unit were loose and would sometimes screech against the other parts in the middle of the night. Guy came to check it out, saw nothing wrong, moved on.

Happened again, called it in again, same thing. "Not seeing the issue."

Called it in a third time. Same story.

Called it in again today and finally it stopped working when he took a look at it. And in fact they had been loose so long they burnt out the whole fan assembly, which means they need to buy me a new air conditioner. Gee, almost like I knew this was exactly the problem. Oh well, not my money that could have been saved by just checking it thoroughly the first time!

So, fun maintenance AC story.

When I first moved out on my own when I was 21, my friend and I moved into an apartment complex that had just been built. It was February, so we had no need for the AC and everything was groovy.

Fast-forward to May and it is brutally hot outside (yay Augusta, Georgia) and it is brutally hot inside of the apartment too. Every time we turned the AC down, it would get warmer and warmer until one day it just didn't work at all.

Finally got ahold of maintenance after a week and they came to figure out the mystery. Turns out, they had wired things wrong: we were controlling the AC for the apartment below us and they were controlling ours.

So the poor people downstairs were freezing and probably screaming at the thermostat they had turned to 85 and couldn't figure out why it was 68 degrees while we were sweating and screaming at ours for the exact opposite reason... and then they moved out, which meant that it got shut off completely.

The maintenance guys thought it was hilarious, and in hindsight, I suppose they were right. 馃槀

@thepreposterouspanda That is amazing! How in the world does one even wire an apartment that wrongly? I'm honestly impressed. And thankful that there's no chance of that happening here!

@FaeLuna I honestly have no idea. We were only there for five months and had so many problems. 馃槀 I'm glad you're safe from that particular madness!

@thepreposterouspanda We just have other madnesses, like the old apartment managers painting over everything, including the outlets. No joke, first day here, and I had to turn off the circuit breakers and grab a putty knife to scrape the paint out of the outlets in order to make them usable!

Probably because you address the problem too soon. Mostly they don't wanna hear that, like "you know better than them."

Usually, I play dumb like "what's wrong with this?" "Why it sounds unsual?" Then, they will check it out.
I don't know why. Which is why I never address the problem even though I know the problem. They won't believe it until they see it.

@iamelijah I can see that being their reasoning. But a large part of my job involves preventive maintenance and checking things so that they don't fail like this, so it's really hard for me to not report something early!

I understand why you might feel that way - but the cost of crappy maintenance is in your rent.
Complain to management.

@Budwick Good point! I hadn't thought of it that way.

It's odd how people who ought to use your great info...can't.
