The thing about anime is that it's a format and a such has a broad array of genres. Some are definitely for nerdy types, but not all.
It's hard for me to list favorites because I consume so much. Some notable ones for me though....
Outlaw Star I originally saw on cartoon network and was kind of my first anime. I got interested but didn't get sucked in.
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha was the first one I actually downloaded episodes for and watched start to finish across multiple arcs.
Akatsuki no Yona is probably my favorite that I would like to see continued today.
For someone not familiar with anime that wanted to get started, I would point them to Erased. I think that one is most capable of appealing to non anime watchers. It's very good.
I personally watch a lot of isekai trash these days. But I've got a pretty broad range. One of the cute ones I'm enjoying this season is Yuri Is My Job.
