Why are so many people against lab-grown meat?

I've never understood the problem people have with lab-grown meat (apart from those selling the traditional type).

I like meat, but I don't like killing animals and I find factory farming horrific. So it's a win-win. It's a lot less "icky" than thinking about what factory farm animals suffer.

I know it's expensive at the moment, but once it's on a par with "traditional" meat, what's the problem?

^ This is the issue. Saying that lab-grown meat is important is tacitly acknowledging that the current farming practices are kind of a horror movie brought to life. People are very, very sensitive about that.
I think the term 'lab grown' is an immediate turnoff.

I raise my animals for food. Rabbits, chickens. Goats, Pigs, Cows (for beef & milk) we also hunt for deer, bear (if we get a chance to)

For one they are playing god with mother nature

Unknowns: Long-Term Health Effects

The reality is that we don’t know the long-term effects of consuming lab-grown meat. Much like genetically modified foods, lab-grown meat is being pushed to market without enough research on its long-term impact on human health. This reminds me of the 1960s when doctors recommended certain cigarette brands. Today, we see the FDA and tech giants like Bill Gates promoting lab-grown meat as a solution for the future, but have we truly considered the risks?

For example, a 2020 study in the Journal of Genetics and Genomics found that gene editing in rice led to unintended mutations. If we can’t predict the long-term effects of gene editing in plants, how can we confidently say that lab-grown meat is safe for human consumption?
Contamination Risks and Chemical Exposure

Another significant concern is contamination during the production process. When growing cells in a lab, there are many opportunities for contamination by bacteria, fungi, and parasites. To prevent this, large amounts of antibiotics and chemicals must be used. So, not only are you consuming meat grown in a tank, but you’re also ingesting the antibiotics and chemicals used to keep it "clean."

The process also involves adding sugars, fats, acids, and vitamins to the cells to ensure proper growth. Without an animal’s immune system to filter out toxins, lab-grown meat could be more susceptible to contamination than farm-raised meat.

@HumanEarth

I don't think there are any health benefits, not even basic nutrients found in natural animal meat.
What are they growing it from tho? 😳 gross

Why so sad?
@calicuz im not sad im suspicious 😒

It's a lack of trust of anything man made. Who knows what the hell is in there. I lost trust in the FDA years ago.
carpediem · 61-69, M
@Gibbon Amen. I’ll stick with eating locally raised and harvested dead animals.
SatanBurger · 36-40, FVIP
I'm kinda with HumanEarth on this one, we don't know implications. Also animal harvesting doesn't bother me, I'd love to learn how to hunt.

I don't understand people who have a problem with torturing something they are ultimately going to kill. Once you die you're gone and everything that happened before ceases to matter. Our entire existence doesn't matter in fact, people care about things because they are slaves to their feelings and they believe they are important but the truth is suffering doesn't exist because we're all already dead

@Jackaloftheazuresand 🤦🏻‍♀
It's relatively new, so it's unknown whether there will be any long term health risks associated with it.
So much of the food we currently eat is heavily modified as it is - and we're paying for it in increased numbers of young people getting cancer.

The last thing we need is scientists taking carte blanche to screw with animals and animal produce that people are going to be eating.

We virtually threw away solid lard because vegetable oil was supposed to be better for us - and now it's being linked to colon-rectal cancer.

Lab grown meat does nit, and will not in the future, provide any nutrition to the human body. There is no point in eating anything if it doesn't provide life giving nutrients............... unless it's doughnuts........ the world needs doughnuts. 🤤
Humans have been consuming natural and animal sources of food for centuries Food items created artificially in labs IMO are not necessarily about our food consumption or anything related to it.
