I have heard of dogs being put down when they are past there best.And worse ,heard of one owner throwing dogs into the sea

Yes. Times are changing. The zeitgeist of the world is changing: people don't find animals performing for our pleasure entertaining anymore. That goes for circuses and aquarium parks where animals are made to do undignified things to please a crowd.
