Should unicorns be granted protected status as an endangered species or should their existence remain mythical ?

They're a bit like Tinkerbell or various gods. Their existence depends on people believing in them.

Perhaps a special park or temple could be opened where visitors could pay money to think about unicorns and thus un-endanger them..
