Does your dog wait for you?

If I go food shopping for a couple of hours or so and leave him in the kitchen area, with toys and water/treats. He won't drink or touch any thing until he knows I'm home.
I've gone out and not even gone to do anything. I've just gone to sit and watch him on the cctv but he whines at the door then tires himself out until he falls asleep.
Although lately his newest thing is to jump up to the microwave which is on top of the counter to steal anything that may be on top.
