Ehhhhhh "highly functioning" is debatable. My bf/roommate/whatever he is calls himself that, and yes, he has a job, pays his bills, and is a very present and attentive father.
But he also has devastating angry outbursts, emotional breakdowns, sloppy cooking sessions in the middle of the night where he burns pots to the copper and leaves the kitchen filthy for me the next day, and he certainly is not a good boyfriend.
So yeah on the surface it looks like he's functioning, but he's actually a Trainwreck.

@LeGrotesque Sorry to hear it. I don’t have those effects, but my sleep isn’t good.
Repent! Your liver will thank you, and as a bonus you'll live longer!👍

@EldritchFox That definitely scares me.

That's what my father said... he nor any other alcoholic I've ever know is. He was nearing 60 when he finally got the message, then died shortly after that.

I’m not arguing the definition — I’m pointing out the psychology. People don’t use that term to be clinical; they use it to feel better about something uncomfortable.
Anyone saying they are a "functional alcoholic" is like saying they are a ‘polite arsonist.’ The adjective is doing all the rationalizing work.
You can't absent rationalization from the term, the term describes and is defined by rationalization.

Ironically, can be a problem because you won’t hit a “rock bottom” before it’s too late.

@Fukfacewillie Indeed, I’ve thought about that, too.
