I’m aware that many here don’t want to talk about politics or religion

I have no aversion to these for the sake of debate and getting to know someone, and I think finding friends must include things like these. Friendship is a fundamental part of my being on social media and these is possibly a good a place as is likely for honest conversations.

People get very passionate about this stuff because it tends to be a big part of their lives and identity. Religion tends to come with a whole suite of family and local community traditions. And sure people may not care about politics but politics definitely cares about them.

Refusing to talk about politics or religion just feels like saying you aren't interested in knowing anyone too deeply.
