I avoid generalising but God I've never felt so unwelcomed than when I was in France

@HijabaDabbaDoo That’s quite an accomplishment for them. 😬

@HijabaDabbaDoo I had a GREAT TIME in Paris. I had taken a bit of French literally 40 years earlier, and so I could start each conversation or interaction with a sentence or sentence fragment in English. That one attempt was all that was needed for the French person to reply politely in English and carry on in English. One small effort in French was all it took.

@HijabaDabbaDoo My step mom is Parisian. Love her, she's super cool. I still wouldn't go around telling people i was from there.

In college, our music dept head gave a few of us a bad enough time for having French/Haitian roots. He started by calling us "French ‘n*****s’", but ended up liking us in spite of himself. When he took the Glee Club to Paris, we all got to go, too.

@AlienTheExtraterrestrial Indeed. One of the reasons the country is so poor is because they were forced to pay reparations for European property loss (slaves).

@bijouxbroussard Hey, by the way, you owe us money because you stole your bodies from us
bijouxbroussard · F
@AlienTheExtraterrestrial Yeah, basically. Same thing happened here…the money that had been earmarked for "forty acres and a mule" to go to freed slave families was given to former slaveowners instead.

I’d admit to lots of things ( cannibalism , pedophilia, incest, etc..) before admitting I’m French

They've got their problems but they're pretty based as a nation. If they didn't give a haircut to their royals we'd all be still living in the middle ages, in terms of civil rights. The US itself would maybe be still under British rule.

I haven't known many French natives who could hide their accent well.
As an American who visited southern France this year (I never touched Paris)... I don't get the hate.

I guess it could be worse... you could be forced to admit that you come from the US - and you voted for Trump twice...
