What are you supposed to say to people when something horrible happens?

A kid I go to school with, his brother has a brain tumour. 😪
I don't talk to him much, and when he talks to me it's never nice. But he's sad and I want to say something. I just don't know what or how.
If my brother was sick, I'd be very sad as well.

It's hard to know what to say sometimes. I prefer finding something practical I can do for someone, that will help. But that might be difficult in this sort of situation. 😟
