Actress and singer Nichelle Nichols, best known as Star Trek's communications officer Lieutenant Uhura, died Saturday night in Silver City, New Mexico. She was 89 years old.

RIP African-American icon. 😔 She made TV history in that role and broke countless barriers along the way. She joins her other Trek castmates who have passed (including Leonard Nimoy), all now "boldly going where no human has gone before".
