I Have A Story

Working for Something

I ran out to get bagels for brunch today and had an unexpectedly nice conversation with the girl behind the counter.

Millennials seem to go through life with their ears plugged up with headphones, and this girl was working behind the counter, taking orders, with one ear occupied with an earbud. So imagine my surprise when we were able to actually carry on a conversation.

Her partner behind the counter was a jolly fat man, singing something off key. I said to them both with a smile, "no wonder she she has those things in," pointing to my ears. She smiled back to me. He said, "I'm singing because I'm off in two minutes." "But I'm here all day" was her reply.

I said to her "I did that, working long shifts on the the weekends helped put me through college." And she then told me her story and her plan, how she wants to be a nurse and do pediatrics and is working her way through school with this and another job. Big respect for that, she had that look in her eye that said to me, she's serious about achieving that goal. Reminded me of myself a little, working for my education one $5 an hour at a time.

Good luck bagel girl, I put a little extra in the tip jar for you.

NB: I'm a shy type and normally don't engage people, but I was feeling it today because I'd just been talking to a good friend who always inspires me to stretch out and take chances. So I felt I ought to capture that e perience in writing because she'd want to know.

Awesome story and thanks for helping her out. You know what I do for work and it's not really a tip kinda job, but I've had parents come up to me and give me something extra "to help with college"! 👍
