Do you pronounce "Iraq" like "eye rack"? Or just "eeraq"?

I always heard Americans say "eye rack" but today on Master Class website an ex FBI negotiator/author called Chris Voss pronounced it "eeraq" so I'm confused.

[@10788,PiecingMeBackTogether] Good thing I'm not alone .lol
[@73351,marsbar] Nice. Same ✌
[@334441,summersong] Interesting I really didn't know that some Americans say it like that. I say it like that too because it's closer to the Arabic name.

Eeraq is correct. We just Americanize the shit out of stuff. lol
[@605647,DarkHeaven] Exactly 🤭
Eye Rack is the American pronunciation, while Ee Rock is closer to the Arabic one. Like Americans pronounce it Meck Sick Ko while Mexicans pronounce it May Hee Ko. Or Izz Ree Ull vs. Iss Rye Yell. Or Germany vs. Deutschland.

“Eeraq" is the more correct pronunciation of Iraq (as is “Eeran" the more correct pronunciation of Iran).
[@475592,DragonFruit] Exactly, Israel too. Imagine someone saying eye srael 😅 eyes are real lol

[@10788,PiecingMeBackTogether] Some here even pronounce Italian as “Eye talian”....but still pronounce Italy as “Ih taly”.

I find myself using either of them
deadgerbil · 22-25, M
[@10788,PiecingMeBackTogether] never! Lol
[@761112,deadgerbil] I hope you get eaten by a mantis.

[@10788,PiecingMeBackTogether] I hope your clothes are ravaged by locusts

[@10788,PiecingMeBackTogether] I used to teach a course on the Middle East. I had students from Iraq (and Iran, Israel, Egypt...) and this is how they said to pronounce it. I had some really great students from the Middle East!

For me, the i is a short vowel, and I place the stress on the second syllable.

If I'm not thinking about it too hard I'll say "eye-rack" cause I'm American, but I know how it's supposed to be pronounced.
