International Wheelchair Day

Apparently today is International Wheelchair Day. I suppose whoever invented that thought they were being inclusive
There is an actual living, breathing PERSON in the chair. So why celebrate a chair? ?

Maybe the point isn't so much about the wheelchair itself... but it could be about providing people with a platform that they can use to raise awareness of how wheelchairs affect their lives???

Even in 2021, we still have ignorant people who insist on standing in the way of wheelchair users and refuse to give way when politely asked to do so, we still have shops and other premises that are inaccessible to wheelchair users, we still have the idiots who park on the only area of the pavement where the kerb is dropped and people who randomly think that it's acceptable behaviour to grab the handles of someone's wheelchair and take off with it and them.

Wheelchair users, in a lot of ways, are still being treated like second grade citizens and people need to be more aware of how they can better help when they do see someone in a wheelchair.

@HootyTheNightOwl I don't think that is ignorance so much as it is a lack of compassion. A majority of the offenders you describe know exactly what they are doing.

I don't understand awareness days for medical devices. It only makes sense if you highlight the diseases that may require them that also don't get enough attention for funding. But no one does that. 🤷‍♀️
If we pretend to care about fringe minorities.. ppl will think we are good guys..

I personally try to virtue signal at least 3x a day.

Good point. We should celebrate those that must occupy the chairs.
Yeah....its a bit of an insult .

Honestly....these government organisations spend money on all sorts of crap , and they THINK they are doing a wonderful job.

When really.... They ain't doing squat.

I’m all for having a day celebrating the invention of the wheelchair. I’ve been in a wheelchair for the past 29 yrs. I very grateful for the indepedence it gives me.

Or thank the creator of them since many need them for everyday life.
