I Live In the Country

Lightning bugs! I just went to feed my outside dog and there they were. Like glitter in the night sky. A few years ago I suddenly realized that I hadn't seen any at all for a few summers. I did a little Google research and found that they are present when there is plenty of rain early in the year making their food supply plentiful. At least I think that's what it said, lol. My memory isn't what it used to be. Anyway, it is always a joy to see them. Reminds me of catching them when I was a child. Yes, we put them in mason jars for pets until mother would make us let them go. Then there were always the ones my very bad much older brother would squish just to make the rest of us mad.

I chase lightening bugs aka fireflies with my little nephew. Once in awhile he will squeeze too hard and I get grossed out but we love to do it. I got yellow lights and put them in a purple Mason jar to make him a nightlight. When they twinkle in the night he says they are his fake lightening bugs. ;)

@Fungirlmmm hi! I remember you from e.p!
How sweet of you to fix the nephew his own 'fireflies '. And a great idea. I will definitely do that for my little grandson one day. Thanks for sharing!

@sunni You're welcome. You can even get little battery powered ones at Dollar Tree. I'm not sure you are in the USA though.

@Fungirlmmm oh my! Love the dollar tree! And yes, very american. Way down south near the tombigbee.

I loved catching them on a hill in the mountains when I was a kid
We looked for night crawler worms for my Uncle and Dad to fish and all us kids would catch lightning bugs ,,those are cool childhood memories
Thanks for the share dear
I pray your days and nights are blessed ones
@rckt148 Like a time machine.

@rckt148 yes my days and nights are blessed indeed! The little things that take us back to simpler times, less hectic lives, innocence. Ha..these young whippersnappers just don't get it...LOL!
Oh my. That reminded my feeble brain of...WHIPPORWILLS!! I adore hearing them!
I remember lightning bug catching nights too. And the peepers and the bullfrogs harmonizing along the creek. Playing statues and Mother May I in the backyard while the grownups cranked homemade peach ice cream on the back porch.

Thank you for bringing all that back.

@Mamapolo2016 absolutely! My mama thought she was the queen of homemade ice cream! And she had the fat lil kids to prove it! 🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦

My brother would shake them in a jar to find us when we'd play hide-n-seek at night out in the woods. 😊I miss it back there...I miss the fireflies and my brother!

I haven`t seen any of those in years.
sunni · 61-69, F
@Degbeme I was reading about their diminishing numbers right now. They need damp marshy areas to survive to blinking adults. A very good article on treehugger.com/animals/whats-happening-fireflies.html

@sunni Thank you. I`ve copied the link. ;)

I was researching lightning bugs too. I didn't see as many this year and we had ALOT of rain. Maybe we had too much. 🤷‍♀️
