I Am a Daughter of a Mentally Ill Mom

I know addiction is a painful disease to have and that nobody ever asks for it, but I also remember all the ways she hurt me while under the influence, all the times she sabotaged our efforts to help her, and how damn smug she gets whenever she manages to stay sober for more than 30 days.

Yep. Dealing with addicts is the worst.
Really hard work. Especially if you live with one.

I think many have to lose everything before they want to help themselves.
And of course by then those close to them have had to walk away for their own safety.

@Picklebobble2 Fir better or worse, it’s left me with a very good sense of the quickest way out of most rooms and how throwable most things are. 🤷‍♀️

@TiffAching Oh if it's descended to violence maybe the only way is to actually throw them out !

Far harder to get what you want and manipulate people if they're not living in the same environment.

@Picklebobble2 I haven’t lived with her for years

I can’t personally relate but my cousin had a drunk father. He was a hardcore drunk and would beat his wife in front of him and so he’s been through a lot. It especially upsets my cousin when his father (my uncle) attempts to get sober only to go right back to it weeks later or even months later.

My uncle fought in Dessert Storm for the US Army and he’s seen horrible things so I understand why he drinks but it doesn’t make it right. Funny thing is my dad is abusive too but he’s sober when he does it. In my case I’m the one drinking to numb myself of the abuse. There’s a stereotype out there that paints all alcoholics as the trailer park man in a tank top with a ketchup stain on it who beats his wife. Not all alcoholics are the same in terms of why they drink. Your mother must be dealing with something else deep inside.

@HermannFegelein Nope, she’s just an asshole.

It's sad to see people who just never mature. Especially when its our own friends and family.

Sorry you had to live like that.

Give good care and consideration

@olderguy2016 I do what I can. I also walk with a bit of a limp—it’s gotten better with time, and I’ve gotten better at hiding it, but it’s still there—from one of the times she drove me drunk to school and hit another car.

No one should have to endure that, especially not a child. My heart goes out to you.

I'm sorry.. this can really mess people up having a parent like this.
