New places

There is little more interesting than walking around a city or town that one has never explored before. Following the old streets, finding old shops, canals, hidden buildings, churches and castles is great. Even finding weird old pubs that only the locals enter. France is a great place for that, and parts of Germany. England too, of course, and Scotland. Ever been to Berwick Upon Tweed? Nothing but history!

I loved some of the beautiful pubs in Stratford

@Celt43 I was in a shop there that sold the most amazing scones with cream and strawberries.

@OnlyRhonda yes there are a few of then there I found it to be a particularly beautiful town tho so was Warwick and leamington
OnlyRhonda · 36-40, F
@Celt43 I agree with you about Stratford. Don't know the other two though!

@OnlyRhonda I enjoyed exploring Stratford-on-Avon too, finding it has lots of commercial history as a former inland port, beyond the obvious Shakespeare link.

I don't know if it was the one you found but Stratford has a rather wonderfully kitsch WW2-themed tea-room, too. It sells real tea - it must be real because it comes in a pot with the leaves in an infuser!

Lovely riverside walks as well, down one bank for perhaps a mile, across a bridge and back up the other. Last time I was there I walked the other way, following the canal for a mile or two.

Have you been to St. Malo, in Northern France? Its old walled town is wonderful to explore, with lots of small squares between the lofty 3- or 4-storey buildings.

@ArishMell St Malo the old privateer haven? A fascinating place that used to send privateers to ravage English shipping! Love these historical places.

@OnlyRhonda I didn't know that aspect!

I expect there were English privateers doing the opposite though.

I did enjoy my day there, having arrived in the morning for the evening ferry back to England. I had an unexpected bonus, an arts and folk festival on, with music and dancing in many of those hidden squares.

@ArishMell Oh, yes, We had our share of privateers - but the French were experts. Much better than us.
That sounds like a lovely surprise.

@OnlyRhonda Thank you! It was - I'd driven a long way back across France and had no idea what was happening in the town.
