Too much, so my dentist says--- and now Ive overused a water-pick --- my dentist, in all his frustration told me, " it's a damn water-pick, not a pressure-washer,,, now I have an exposed nerve and will likely have to have a root-canal-----dammit

Welcome to growing old. The over aggressiveness is only part of it. I was advised to use one of those little rubber triangle thingies to massage my gums and avoid/reverse the gum regression revealing my tooth roots.
