I Compose Music

I love to compose and have done from an early age...although some of the early 'pieces' I wrote were in retrospect pretty hilarious in how awful they were (I'm no Mozart :P ).

I write mostly in a classical/romantic idiom, perhaps with an occasional more modern harmonic twist. I think the structures of classical music (of large works or within a single piece of music itself eg the use of sonata form) helps to give organisation to a piece of music...which sometimes can be said to be lacking in contemporary 'serious' music. [[I don't mean to suggest that pop etc isn't 'serious' or indeed 'good' but most people seem to distinguish between the easily-digestible delight of say Taylor Swift, from eg the wonderful (but rather more difficult) music of the late John Tavener]]

The structures of classical music arose from an enlightened 'ordered' understanding of the world, that sought to achieve balance and natural ratios within works (indeed it was taken to extremes were the development section of a piece in sonata form was supposed to be a multiple, length-wise, of the exposition, and so on). I like the order that this brings to the music. Of course rules are very much meant to be broken at the greatest composers of the classical period, such as Mozart, Haydn, early Beethoven, etc, drove smack into these rules and occasionally over them...but the point is that they all knew what the rules were and tested their boundaries -- rather than ignoring their very existence!

So, I compose in a classical style, in the main...

What do you compose your work on? Do you just pen and paper it or do you have some really good composition software?

Wow... just wow! Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I learned so much, including a brief synopsis of classical music. Your final sentence summed up the composers nicely: "...but the point is that they all knew what the rules were and tested their boundaries -- rather than ignoring their very existence!"

@Lhayezee I see your point. I like Bach very much.

@Mugin16 And Bach! See how easy it is to forget someone you love when asked to choose!
