I Have Been Caned

Just the once,Dad promised me he would cane me if he caught me smoking. He did catch me and true to his word,he made me fetch a cane from the shed told me to bend over the chair,my pants were removed and I got 6 of the best. That was perhaps the most painful punishment I ever experienced.

caning was never a deterent , it was a punishment, though it may have had some motivational aspect. Unlike confiscation of mobiles or toys for example, it was relatively quick , stung like hell an dthe drama of disrobing and bending over was part of the discipline. I was caned often , though must admit there were many occasions that I wasn't caught doing things that would have meant me bending over so I tended to accept the times I was caned. Caning was a lot more common in the1970s for both sexes and cannot be compared to today.

@Dez580 I believe that boys are really from another planet. Their view on punishment is different from ours, and what you said is a perfect example. Boys see it as a calculated risk. They do something which they know they will be punished for if caught, and getting caught is just tough luck. It doesn't mean they will not do it again, it just means they have to try harder not to get caught.

@helenS You make a very salient point, though i did know some girls who thought along the same lines as myself, but i would never make assumptions as there is always exceptions to a rule

@Dez580 Where I grew up there was a general "boys will be boys" attitude; they were allowed to do many things we would have been punished for. For example they were not supposed to be quiet except when addressed.

@helenS @Dez580 I never noticed any significant difference between the sexes in regard to their attitude to being caned. All the girls I associated with saw it as just the price to be paid for being caught doing what we wanted. It never really deterred any of us.

@helenS But, at least in the city I grew up in, boys were much more likely to get the cane at school than girls were.

@Sharon Then it won't teach you anything, except being smarter at not getting caught.

@MartinII Must be a cultural thing. To me it seems that where you grew up, boys were trained to figure out how to not get caught.

@helenS Well, just a single example. Growing up I had two particular friends, a girl my age and her younger brother. They were both experts at not getting caught, because they knew if they were their mum would give them stinging bottoms. I was less good at it, because the consequences for me were less.

@MartinII An early example of gender equality 😏

@helenS And of enlightened parenting …🤔
@helenS Trying to avoid getting caught seems mentally healthy. No punishment, by itself is going to teach the underlying ethical principle that makes the misbehavior wrong. Theory or ethics is needed to link the two things!
