I think it was a common punishment for smoking, back in the day, but didn't work well. It's been peer pressure and cultural change that has reduced young people's smoking more, I think.

You silly, silly man! Imagine being warned and still being caught! When you are warned, you must take more precautions. I'd have given you six for smoking and four more, three days later, for allowing yourself to be caught.

caning was never a deterent , it was a punishment, though it may have had some motivational aspect. Unlike confiscation of mobiles or toys for example, it was relatively quick , stung like hell an dthe drama of disrobing and bending over was part of the discipline. I was caned often , though must admit there were many occasions that I wasn't caught doing things that would have meant me bending over so I tended to accept the times I was caned. Caning was a lot more common in the1970s for both sexes and cannot be compared to today.

I have never been caned but have had my bare bottom paddled and strapped many times. I found the strap to be an especially effective teaching aid. Birdie

Smoking was the most common reason for a caning at my school. Everyone knew that if you were reported to the headmaster you would be beaten. But plenty of boys still risked it!
