I Have Been Caned

Just the once,Dad promised me he would cane me if he caught me smoking. He did catch me and true to his word,he made me fetch a cane from the shed told me to bend over the chair,my pants were removed and I got 6 of the best. That was perhaps the most painful punishment I ever experienced.

caning was never a deterent , it was a punishment, though it may have had some motivational aspect. Unlike confiscation of mobiles or toys for example, it was relatively quick , stung like hell an dthe drama of disrobing and bending over was part of the discipline. I was caned often , though must admit there were many occasions that I wasn't caught doing things that would have meant me bending over so I tended to accept the times I was caned. Caning was a lot more common in the1970s for both sexes and cannot be compared to today.

@helenS Well, just a single example. Growing up I had two particular friends, a girl my age and her younger brother. They were both experts at not getting caught, because they knew if they were their mum would give them stinging bottoms. I was less good at it, because the consequences for me were less.

I think it was a common punishment for smoking, back in the day, but didn't work well. It's been peer pressure and cultural change that has reduced young people's smoking more, I think.

@Sharon I remember an incident that was reported in my local paper in the late 60s. A mother had complained that her daughter had been caned (across the legs apparently) at a mixed school near where I lived. The implication of the complaint, and the subsequent comments in the paper, was that it was all very well for boys to be caned, but there was something inappropriate about caning girls. However, I’m not sure that all parents would have taken the same view!

@MartinII Very strange to me, because, where I grew up, there was a "boys will be boys" attitude, and boys got easily away with things we would have been punished for. An inverted double standard, so to speak.

@helenS I think there’s a generational aspect. In the 60s in England there was still an old-fashioned sense of chivalry, and many people regarded girls and women as delicate flowers to be treated gently. (That attitude was by no means universal in schools, as many stories here testify, but I think it was fairly widespread. It certainly seemed to me to be the case at the time.) Feminism changed all that.

Smoking was the most common reason for a caning at my school. Everyone knew that if you were reported to the headmaster you would be beaten. But plenty of boys still risked it!

@RhondasMum Absolutely. I find it impossible to imagine that the tobacco nicotine appeal could override the true agony of six, more less overlapping, cane strokes! And, there are the Russian psych experimenters using cane therapy to help smokers break their addiction. SW member Sharon is remarkable!

@johnstretton2 I agree John that 6 of the best caning on my bare bottom was one of the most painful punishments I got and believe me I got quite a few of those over the years mainly with the slipper

@Briandl It was a one off caning as he promised because he caught me smoking I got the slipper every other time,which also gave me a very sore bottom. The cane was really hard to take, I was in agony and left red stripey marks for days after!
