How Do You Handle Food Pushers?

Food pushers are people who insist you MUST eat a certain food. They do not accept "No, thank you.". They do not even accept medical reasons.
Example: "Aunt Martha baked it from our special family recipe and she'll be hurt if you don't have a piece."
Another typical one, "It's Lillian's birthday and we're all having a piece. I'm not going to argue with you, I'm putting it right on your plate."
And the protest against cutting calories: "No!!! We're Italian! (Or Hungarian, or German, or Roumanian) No one diets at our house!"
When I told my cousin I was following my doctor's advice, she looked around the room and said, "Does anyone here see her doctor? Because I don't. He's not here, so you can eat it!".

Please don't tell me, "I just say a firm No, thank you!" Because with genuine food pushers, normal responses like that don't work. They see it as a contest they're determined to win.

Like drug pushers. Just kidding. I usually give in and eat what they give me, then I throw up right in front of them.

@DestroyerOfIdeologies I like your answer.

@greenmountaingal Thanks :)

This happens a lot with older generations. I just pour it in their plants or give it to their dogs

I let it sit on the plate

@MrBrownstone Good one, if you can do it that way.

I spent my teenage years in a geek/Italian community suburb, all my friends parents places I was invited too, the would take it as an insult if you don’t eat the food offered to you. But saying that, some good food was offered to me.

One time a very salty item was pushed on me. I dont like eating alot of salt. They kept pushing it n me and I gave in. I felt like I was having an anxiety attack with my heart beating wildlyafter eating it. Never again!

Ugh.

I don't really know either. I will sometimes have a nibble.
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@Doomflower "Having a nibble" is basically giving in to them. Because food pushers never put a small amount ("a nibble") on your plate. My cousin Michael asked my elderly cousin Delores for "a sliver" of pie. Delores put a huge piece of pie on his plate. When he protested, "That's NOT "a sliver," her answer was, "To ME, it's 'a sliver.' "
Doomflower · 36-40, M
@greenmountaingal you don't have to eat it all. I just taste it and take the plate and surreptitiously dispose of it.
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@Doomflower Good move. I'll have to try that.

@faseny When I tried to protest that I was following medical advice, my cousin made fun of me, as described above.

@faseny People who would never offer a quitting smoker a cigarette, or give liquor to a guy who just joined AA, will unhesitatingly offer rich food to a fat person trying to stick to a lower calorie diet.

It sounds like you are describing vegans.
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@Grendale Any kind of food fanatic would be very similar to a food pusher.

I just say no and fk them !
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
They're coming from a nice place, if one I want to set on fire.
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@Longpatrol Sorry, but it's not all about generosity. My cousin was obese and had both a heart condition and diabetes so a lot of her teasing was about wanting to sabotage my own attempts at weight loss to make herself feel better for not following her own doctor's advice. By the way, my cousin died a couple of months after she made fun of me for refusing her pie.
