There are different types, both sweet and dry. I think that the best known is the sweet Aszú that is a good dessert wine but also is highly enjoyable on its own or with just a cookie or a little Danablu or Roquefort cheese. Voltaire said about the Tokaji, “This wine invigorated every fibre of my brain and, deep in my soul, produces a charming glint of intelligence and good humour.” Personally I will say that both the dry and the sweet Tokaji wines have such a fullness and richness that they always make a very deep impression. They taste so overwhelmingly sensually that it almost seems sinful. I remember once we served an Aszú as dessert wine at a dinner party. We had a great time and the conversation was lively and spirited but when the dessert and the Tokaji was served it almost killed the conversation for 10 – 15 minutes because our guests were almost overwhelmed by the complexity and intensity of the wine.
polyandrym66, i used to drink that all the time. i would get into a bubble bath and put the tv on the toilet while drinking spumante...pretending to be rich
There are some 400 grape varieties in Georgia, one of the oldest wine growing regions in the world. I have tasted some through my family's Russian connections and they can be wonderful and eclectic if they are not "turbo-charged" for the Russian market (fortified with neutral spirit).
I do not have a favourite wine. Which wine I prefer depends on many things like the occasion, the food and the time of the day. A wine both my husband and I have learned to know and become very fond of over the last 20 years is the Hungarian Tokaji. There are really wonderful Tokaji wines a (I never tasted one that was not at least good) and there is a type for almost all occasions.
We recently came across a very good red wine from the Italian Veneto Region. The is called Amicone and it is much like a good Amarone but much cheaper, really a little gem if you like a good everyday red wine.
Wow! thanks to all of you! some great wines i will have to try. i live in the middle of nowhere but we go to a large liquor store and stalk up so maybe i'll find them there.
Depends on the time of year, where I'm af and what's going on. Love deep Cabernets in the winter. Riesling in summer. I'm not above boxed wine either :)
