How do you keep your longest held relationships alive?

Communication. It’s not about frequency but quality.

I still have several of my friends from first grade - that's about 46 years. We get together for group dinners (well before covid we did)

I am genuinely terrible at friendship maintenance and so are my oldest friends. I think mostly I just lucked out meeting them and making the connections that I did because we will go years without talking and then as soon as we see each other it is like no time has passed. I guess it’s just a mutual understanding that the lack of contact isn’t personal it’s just situational and that there is enough of a foundation to make up for it.

I push everyone away then sit back and wait to see if anyone comes back 😌

I've been friends with one person for almost 10 years... She lives in New Zealand and I live in America. It's pretty hard tbh but we work at it

Forgiveness, treating them always with kindness, and commitment!

As tempting as it is at times, I have to remind myself that the judge may not understand and shes just not worth doing twenty years for at my age.

just stay in touch.
but understand that you can't force things to last. sometimes you need to move on.

We feed each other.

We talk on the phone and text we stop by when in the area, we meet for coffee. Life gets busy but it doesn’t mean you can’t stay in touch and do what you can.

Many things help. Communication, respect, loyalty etc cetera.

I also follow a simple rule. "Friends who want to remain friends shouldn't discuss religion or politics"
