Nursery rhymes are terrifying

Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
Oranges and lemons say the bells of Saint Clemons.
You owe me five Farthings ! Say the bells of Saint Martins.
When will you pay me ? Say the bells of Old Bailey.
When i grow rich. Say the bells of Shoreditch.
When will that be ? Say the bells of Stepney.
I do not know. Say the great bells of Bow.

Here comes a candle to light you to bed.
And here comes a chopper to chop off your head !
Chip. Chop. Chip. Chop. The last man's dead !

Rock-a-by baby on the tree top
When the wind blows the cradle will rock
When the bough breaks the cradle will fall
And down will come baby, cradle and all.

Ring a ring o Rosie
A pocket full of posies
Atishoo. Atishoo we all fall down.

Three blind mice. Three blind mice.
See how they run. See how they run.
They all ran after the Farmer's wife
Who cut off their tales with a carving knife
Did you ever see such a thing in your life
As three blind mice.

Yep. There's plenty of them !
SW-User
I hate them. Creepy as hell @Picklebobble2
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@SW-User The weird thing about them is that there never seems to be a definitive answer as to just what exactly they mean !
Plenty of theories. All given by supposed experts in their fields of history or folklore or middle-ages song etc.
And i think that just adds to the creepiness of them.
SW-User
@Picklebobble2 yes you’re right. Incidentally if you whisper them they’re creepier.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
Goosey goosey Gander where shall i wander ?
Upstairs, downstairs in my lady's chamber.
There i met an old man who wouldn't say his prayers !
So i took him by the left leg and threw him down the stairs !
SW-User
That sinner deserved it!!! 😠@Picklebobble2
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@SW-User Be interesting to find out if that one has a history reference somewhere within it.
SW-User
@Picklebobble2 I’m sure someone would have written a book on them somewhere
Degbeme · 70-79, M
Diddle Diddle Dumpling ...... not to mention creepy as fuck. 😅
SW-User
@Degbeme *whispers* whut?!!
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@SW-User

The rhyme is first recorded in The Newest Christmas Box published in London around 1797. It may be derived from 'Diddle, diddle, diddle Dumpling', a traditional street cry of hot dumpling sellers.
SW-User
@Degbeme poor John. I wonder if he was the same John as dear John and he just received a letter..too drunk to take off his other shoe
JustNik · 51-55, F
Ditties O Death is the soundtrack of my childhood. I turned out okay. 😬
JustNik · 51-55, F
@SW-User we had no seatbelts, no helmets, no kneepads or elbowpads, and if we got thirsty we drank out of the garden hose. It was Survival of the Fittest. (Or dumb luck). All of a theme. 😂👍
SW-User
Hell yes..mud pies never did me any harm. 🤪@JustNik
JustNik · 51-55, F

The old man is snoring.
He bumped his head and went to bed and couldn't get up in the morning

AuRevoir · 36-40, M
Little miss sluttet, show off her big buttocks, making her curves sway…

When along came a blighter, who wanted her to perform as a dildo rider, even tho he had no money to pay.. 😷
SW-User
You see? There’s never a happy ending @AuRevoir
AuRevoir · 36-40, M
@SW-User 😌 because that would be $25 extra and “a handjobs still a job!”
AntisocialTroll · 56-60, F
Fairy tales are often no better, we read em the kiddie version of Stephen King and then tell em to go to sleep and the monsters won't get them, tis child cruelty...
SW-User
@AntisocialTroll true enough. The misogyny in the traditional ones makes me 🤢🤮
alan20 · M
