I Am Thankful

I am grateful for my father,
Though he abandoned our family, he loaned me some dna; therefore he influenced who I am.

I am grateful for my mom,
She raised four of us alone, never sought government help or remarried; thereby teaching me the value of faith and reality of miracles.

I am grateful for the real men of my childhood.
The ones who worked more and said less. The only female head they turned was the woman they kept their vows with, but were always there for just a poor boy in the community exactly when needed.

I am grateful for my family.
Especially children who extend grace to me effortlessly; actually believe my attempts at humor are funny; and want me in their adult lives.

I am grateful for financial security.
Many missed meals and nights wrapped in blankets because we couldn’t afford heat; mismatched hand me down clothes that other kids made fun. Now, needs met, wants a part of the past and the ability to meet needs so satisfying.

I am grateful for my coaching career.
Trying to be grateful for the twilight now. One university and program for 32 years. Two Hall of Fame inductions. 3 national championships and so many All Americans. Alumni who claim 20 to 30 years later to have changed lives as a result. Even with the many failures, what a privilege.

I am grateful for everything I lack or have lost.
The incredible perspective I have gained when faced with the unfairness of life; with tragedy; heart surgery; near death moments; a major accident and the loss of loved ones.

I am grateful for my faith in God.
Less and less popular and under attack in so many ways. More and more friends who are atheists or who have lost confidence in the Bible that I trust. Even so, my faith is secure and that allows me to listen and learn from those who argue against it.

I am thankful this morning.
