Best way to fight off an anxiety attack?

This one has kept me from sleeping all night as it slowly gets worse.
Advanced breathing technique. This technique is used by the military and police forces to focus and take control of their emotional and physiological responses to stress.

Inhale slowly over a count to four
Hold the breath for a count of four
Exhale to a count of four
Wait a count of four
Inhale slowly over a count of four...

Repeat until your heart rate slows and your emotive responses relax. This should help you get to sleep.

Yes, I have used this breathing technique a few times. I discovered it years ago in a government pamphlet I read called Prisoner of War Resistance and Escape
by the US Marine Corp. It works most of the time. Thanks!

Forget about sleeping, do something to occupy your mind that's very absorbing.

The truth is, I am a little shaken up because one of my roommates, a man 20 years younger than me, died yesterday.

omg can you get out of the place for a while? It's probably reminding you of him a lot.

@crossproduct: I just came back from a doctor appointment and I'm on my way out again. I only knew the guy for 10 months but I liked him. He was quite a character. I will miss him.

Close you eyes, take a deep breath and force a smile, smile as you take in the deep breathes and say "only good things come to me" or something positive that will encourage you on, after a minute or two open your eyes and maintain the smile, dont think about the stressful event anymore, focus on the positive things you thought about..if you develop this exercise into regular habit you the anxiety attacks will reduce with time

Camomile tea and lavender scent.
If not burn a candle for 5 mins and blow it out, then let the room fill with the smell of the smoke from the candle that usually a sure way to get you to drift off

No candles allowed in my rented room.
