What can make feet swell?

Almost at the point where I can't get my shoes on.
Mamapolo2016 · F Best Comment
In case you're not scared enough, it's also a symptom of congestive heart failure.

Helping my mother with this I learned how to help with the symptom of fluid swollen feet. Lie down so your feet are at a higher level than your heart, and bend your feet into a toe-pointing position then bend them in the opposite direction as far as you can and repeat for five or ten minutes. It will help with the swelling, but the things that might be causing this are not things you should be ignoring. Good luck.

@Mamapolo2016 Thanks. I Will try that tonight. I had this problem once before.

There could be any of a number of things but high blood pressure and a need for different medication or dose, or reduced kidney function are probably most common reasons.

One of the side effects of the BP med that I take is swelling of the feet and ankles, particularly after a long day. I take a minimal dose and it is hardly noticeable. There are many possible causes. It needs to be checked out.
GunSmoke9 · 56-60, M
@bowman81 I don't take meds. Calling doctor soon. Thanks.

[c=#BF0080]Many things can, but I know two people who had that happen from gout. You need to see a Dr no matter what..[/c]

Thank you for BA, but it was a community effort. And I hope you find the same advice from so many people impossible to discount. If it develops you don't have an issue, you lost half an afternoon. If you do, catching it early can make it much easier to treat. Let us know what you learn..

@Mamapolo2016 I appreciate all the good replies. I will let you know.

Sit and elevate your feet above your heart

High blood pressure is very likely.

Eating to much salt
GunSmoke9 · 56-60, M
@Smiley40s I'll try to cut down. Thanks.
Graylight · 51-55, F
Usually water retention. A diuretic might help; you should talk to your doctor. In the meantime, elevation and rest.
GunSmoke9 · 56-60, M
@Graylight I'll rest better if I lay off politics for now. Thanks.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@GunSmoke9 Sparring is fun, but there are never hard feelings. Rest well, feel better.
GunSmoke9 · 56-60, M
@Graylight You speak your mind, I speak mine, no hard feelings. Thank you.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
I get this too.
My Doctor gave me a blood pressure monitor so i could check it twice a day and record what was going on in a diary.

Three weeks later, inconclusive !

From everything i've read, the only factors common in most cases are age and stress.
But if you're already worried about your feet, how do you reduce the stress ?

Well, try and eat properly, regularly.
Rest up where you can and elevate your feet to above Heart level.
Lower your intake of salt; alcohol and sugar.
Listen to music and do other things less stress-inducing.
Regular exercise and good sleep also help.

Aside from what was already mentioned, it could also be from potassium deficiency. You should get it looked at. Too many potentials that are pretty scary.

Swelling of lower extremities ? Usually congestive heart failure /heart disease , kidney disease , liver disease
GunSmoke9 · 56-60, M
@TexChik Think I'll stick to politics, less scary. Thank you.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
Is it hot where you are ? Your hands and feet can swell in times when it's hot.
GunSmoke9 · 56-60, M
@Picklebobble2 No not really. I've been staying home with the AC on. Thanks.

Edema, could be a kidney problem..
at your age it might be wise to see a doctor about it.
GunSmoke9 · 56-60, M
@SW-User So tired of doctor, but might have to. Thanks.

Water retention ...not drinking enough water
GunSmoke9 · 56-60, M
@SW-User I think I'm drinking plenty of water, but could be wrong. Thanks.

@GunSmoke9 too much salt ?
GunSmoke9 · 56-60, M
@SW-User Not sure, I use when cooking, never when food is done.
Peaches · F
I hope by now you know what the problem is, 🍀best of luck!
GunSmoke9 · 56-60, M
@Peaches Yes, I found out, taking meds. Thanks.
sounds like your holding water 😖 see a doctor sooner then later
therighttothink50 · 56-60, M
You might need a water pill.....
GunSmoke9 · 56-60, M
@therighttothink50 Just got a blood test today. I'll know more next week. Thanks
bowman81 · M
It is also a side effect of Norvasc....a high blood pressure medication. Feet and ankles swell, more pronounced in the evening....usually fine by morning. Yeah, I take it, the swelling has been minor for me.

Get it checked out.
katielass · F
@bowman81 Don't you take a diuretic along with that? I do but my left lower leg, ankle and foot are always swollen.

How is your BP running?
SW-User
@GunSmoke9 But a lot can happen in a year’s time....
GunSmoke9 · 56-60, M
@SW-User Maybe a few weeks, it was a slow thing. My stream is weak most times.
SW-User
Hmmm your steam is weak cause your body is hanging onto that fluid.... You need to seek out why...@GunSmoke9

Edema; heart, liver or kidney issues. Best to have a doctor rule those things out.
GunSmoke9 · 56-60, M
