I Want to Think of 100 Things That Make Me Happy

Four

As mentioned in my last post, in college, I found another interest that made me happy... and no. It's not what you were thinking (get your mind out of the gutter!). I realized my desire to design and create fashion pieces. I had always had an interest in it. I remember keeping a journal full of designs and showing them to my mother. Although she could sew, she never taught me, and full-heartedly believed that my interest in designing would pass and that I would eventually gravitate toward a more practical career choice. But the interest remained... as most of mine have.

So, one day the desire overwhelmed me and I couldn't keep waiting on the sidelines anymore. I went to the nearest store in my podunk college town (Walmart) and purchased a sewing machine. Then I went online and purchased fabric, or rummaged through the local thrift stores to find vintage patterns that would be fun to use. I deconstructed old clothes and repurposed them. I read books on sewing, watched videos, and printed off online tutorials for different patterns. I never attended a sewing class, and just taught myself.

There are few things in my life that have created the same effect that fashion design had over me. I would work for hours a day, no music, just the sound of my sewing machine and quiet concentration. Learning a new technique was like my breath. I was obsessed to some degree, yet I didn't feel like a slave to it at all. It was more like finding a piece of me that I had been yearning to uncover for years. It was liberating and exciting. Every moment at the machine was like a new opportunity for exploration.

I eventually opened my own Etsy store, and started traveling regionally to sell at other conventions and fairs. It was a passion of mine for quite some time. Then I took a break from it upon entering Grad School, and have never quite found time to return to it until this year.
Could we see photos of some of your creations?
