I Play Magic the Gathering

I started playing very briefly when it was first about here in the UK in the 90s, but it wasn't until about 6 years ago that I started getting heavily into it and attended a local small FNM community. Since then I've really come to admire the game, how it brings people together and how it can condition your mind.

I've built my own decks for most of that time, and while I've dabbled with every colour I've predominantly been fond of white and black, with red not being too far behind. I mostly choose to work out the constructions purely based on what I can come up with on my own without looking at guides or what others have done, so I'm not as great a player as I could be; I just find satisfaction in knowing that when I've built a deck and it succeeds that it's purely my own doing. I'm particular fond of a close-to-modern artifact deck that I've built which can be fun to bring out and see people react to.

I'm just there to enjoy the game rather than be all that competitive. It's great to get away from technology for a while to enjoy something with a community of decent people in the flesh and do something that puts your mind to the test.

It seems the video game versions got a number of people into it/back into it. I picked it back up after playing the original 'Duels of the Planeswalkers' through PS+ on the Playstation 3. It's a great tool for teaching people the game.

How often do you play now?

Heh I bet that was a bit of a headache to go through. I have a bunch of folders myself, but I've got a pile of standard cards sorted only by colour lying around the place which I have no idea what to do with. Maybe if I really get bored I'll make a bunch of Pauper decks.

That would have driven me up the wall if it was my mother. We are a little nuts though if we do spend big money on a small piece of cardboard, but what some people wouldn't be able to understand is that it's an investment over time. I spent about £200+ on my artifact deck getting cards like Mox Opal and Karn Liberated, but I know I'll get more than that back if I ever needed to sell them on to collectors and players.

Bought these from an auction. Only 1 other person knew what they were

Cool. What got you into it?

A few probably about £150 worth. I bought an album full of them about 3 years back for about £3 there was a Tarmogoyf (£65) and a few others which I cashed in on. Definitely need to start playing again as I'll end up with thousands of 'valueless' cards. Still looking for a Black Lotus!

I'd change my FB pick to me holding it up. My mum things whatever I buy is a waste of money, she threw no end of my things away when I lived at home as it was 'rubbish' and simply doesn't believe a 'card' could be worth more than a few pence.

£32. If the other bloke hadn't been there I'd have got them for less than a fiver, still that's the way these things work. Plus the look on his face as we got closer and closer to what he had in his wallet was worth it.

I think every magic player secretly wishes they would stumble upon a Black Lotus somewhere for next to nothing heh even if they just wanted it to see the faces on the people when you played it in front of them.

Hehe very nice. Have you found any money cards amongst them yet?

Nice haul. How much did that set you back?
