Then work towards that goal. Maybe with an older car though, as they are much easier to do. But if you set your mind to doing something, keep at it. There are lots of good books out there too about all aspects of car repair.
But as others have said, the newer cars are much more difficult to work on, and require more expensive tools. Older cars are of a technology that a home hobbyist can do virtually everything on them that could ever need to be done.
