Then work towards that goal. Maybe with an older car though, as they are much easier to do. But if you set your mind to doing something, keep at it. There are lots of good books out there too about all aspects of car repair.
But as others have said, the newer cars are much more difficult to work on, and require more expensive tools. Older cars are of a technology that a home hobbyist can do virtually everything on them that could ever need to be done.

They are much harder to work in now. The car Industry doesn't want us working on them. They make more money by them working on them or u buying new.
But yes learn to do as much as you can to save money.
