I Am Open to New Ideas and Experiences

Just been thinking; addictions aren't really a problem if no one is suffering. If no one is being affected by it, is it really a problem?

I have a friend who drinks a lot, as in everyday. However, he doesn't have any qualms about it. It doesn't have any negative impacts to his relationships with other, and doesn't affect his professional life. I tease him and call him an alcoholic, but that's just something between him and I. He also is a pleasant person to be around when he's intoxicated.

Addiction is classified as a psychological disorder. However, the basis of what a disorder is; it has to cause the afflicted person some sort of distress.

So, if he isn't bothered by his dependency, is it even an addiction, or disorder? Is it even a problem? This can be applied to other forms of addiction... just a random thought I had 🤷🏽‍♀️

Alcohol is nasty, it can consume your life without you realizing it. I was always fun to be around while I was drunk, however I would wake up and be ashamed of myself for getting so drunk. If you know someone who drinks everyday and seems like they're fine they're probably not. I've never been depressed per say but I will admit I had a bit of an alcohol problem... I wouldn't drink for a few days and use that as an excuse to drink a bunch during the weekend. I hardly drink at all now and my quality of life has improved tremendously. I didn't know I had a problem until I stepped outside of myself and looked in the mirror.

The problem would be that he's building up his tolerance level, and it will take more and more alcohol to get to the feeling that he's having. It will eventually be a problem, i think.
