Did you go on any weird field trips in school?

We were taken to a taxidermist in 1st grade. Who approved that?

Yes in Sociology our class went to a minimum security prison one afternoon and a week before we went to the county jail. They slammed a door in the jail and then we realized why they call it The Slammer

@cherokeepatti I guess jails and prisons are a more common field trip destination than I would’ve expected.

@itsok I think they did it so we wouldn’t be tempted to get into trouble. The door slamming was so loud it was unnerving

@Stereoguy My eye was twitching constantly on the bus trip and all during the visit to the prison and back again. I had to figure out why. It was because when I was 10 years old our father left us in a motel room and told us to stay inside while he went somewhere. About 2 hours later we got a knock on the door and my sister opened it. It was people from the department of human services telling us our father checked himself into the V.A. Hospital and that they were going to take us to a nice shelter for children until they could find relatives for us to live with. When we got to the shelter it looked like a jail, bars over all the windows and a very tall fence with rows of barbed wire on top of the fence, and a grave led yard. They took us inside and told the cook to give us lunch. Then told us to sit inside a living area. Everything we did had to be by permission and the older children told us the rules. By that night I was sick & threw up. They put me in a room with an older girl who had gotten in trouble for something and took my sisters to a dorm with a bunch of stacked bunk beds. It was traumatic to be locked up with criminals when we had been abandoned. Everyone was telling why they got put in the detention center
