I Have a Question

Let’s suppose that God does exist.

If God being the greatest authority with the highest power gets people to side with him because of his power, that is still an action that would be considered convenient for the self.

If God presents us with a heaven if we worship him and a hell if we don’t.... underneath the facade the only one we are worshipping is OURSELVES in seeking to do what will get us this heaven or have us avoid hell.

It is self-preservation or eternal self-preservation.

Now let’s say that God wants a person to be self-preservative because he made them. So it’s back to: “I don’t mind if you are using me for your benefit, if you do what I want, you get heaven, if you don’t do what I want you send yourself to hell.”

Then it’s just like ALL of us humans are.

When people do what we want we are happy, we say that we “love” them, we call them friend.

But if they don’t do what we want we are upset, we call them insensitive, or mentally deranged.

Yesterday I was giving a little girl advice and I told her:

Listen people will never be satisfied.
They will always tell you that you “should” do more of this or that to grow.
They will be happy if you do what they want.
They will be mad if you don’t do what they want.
Now YOU pick who you will attempt to please or not ultimately for your benefit. Just know that if they are never pleased don’t take it personally. Two different entities, two different set of desires, whoever has more power will try to manipulate, you decide if you are IN or OUT depending on if you are willing to deal with the consequences.

These kinds of thoughts kept me up at night as a kid. I reasoned that God knew I was only saying I loved him because I didn't want to go to hell and would send me there for being a liar. I prayed that God would make me love him truly.

But how can you love someone who is holding a gun to your head?

Thank goodness I escaped that whole delusion.

@CookieLuvsBunny That is where our paradigms differ. You say there is no purpose and I say there is. Nobody's mind is going to change on an online forum.

@SheikYerbouti I agree that no one's mind is going to be changed here

@CookieLuvsBunny Fair enough.

I wish someone had advised me this as a child. I was a people-pleaser until a few years back. Now I know from experience and lot of thinking and seeing people’s behavior that everyone wants everything to be in a way they want.. it extends so much that they want others to behave just the way they think is ‘right’.
You should do this, not that. Why are you doing this and not that. I told you to do this.
And then the pitch rises, hurt and distance is created.
They want to control others so much. They can’t let anyone just be as they are, or let them do as they wish. I’ve seen people try to control every single aspect of others. Food, sleep, even what type of shows you can or cannot see. It frustrates me so much that i try to level it by being alone and being myself as much as i can. People won’t change, they won’t stop controlling me or how i am or what i want, so instead i try to not give them that control and be as i am.

No idea about God but we create our own heaven and hell on this earth by our control and expectations. People never let anyone be free from their controlling nature.

@ethereal I completely agree with your words. Daily, every interaction with a human is trying to get us to do what is wanted. For example even when a person talks, they are indirectly telling you to listen and respond. From our jobs, to relationships, to family it is what you want vs. what others want. If you don’t do what others want then you already know what’s going to happen. This is a reality that is easy to grasp once we analyze our day to day lives and interactions with others. You are a wise one for noticing this reality! It is never too late, some 95 year olds still have no idea.

@Doomflower @SheikYerbouti The entire "free will" argument is a contrivance made up by Christians to explain away how an omnipotent god could create both good and evil and yet not be responsible for its own actions. It is prima facie nonsensical

@CookieLuvsBunny it's their attempt to avoid the problem of evil. There's nothing contradictory about an omniscient and omnipotent god that doesn't necessarily love us. The problem is when Christians claim that this god is one of love.

You know, the god that according to his own book gave his very special people in one tiny area of the planet very special instructions (613 of them) on how to buy and sell slaves, when to stone your kids to death, how to be "clean" so god can like you, the proper sacrifices to make, what to wear, and what kinds of food you can eat among other things. The one that according to his own book had his son murdered so he didn't have to be angry at humans because he put a magic tree in the middle of a garden and told people who did not even know what death was that they would die if they ate the fruit.

Bit of a tangent but... why would he put the tree there? Seriously. If you don't want your toddler playing with knives you wouldn't put them in a room with knives and then tell them "don't touch the knives or I will flay you living", leave them alone with an older, smarter kid who wants the child to be harmed, and then claim to love them when you follow through after they predictably disobey.

Sorry for the rant. I just find Christianity especially offensive.

I was always perplexed by some of the simple things, like if we all came from adam and eve where did all the races come from, shouldn't we all be black or white or olive, ect. And what about the Neanderthal it is not like they never existed.

Very thought provoking, I'm following you now...just fyi
I think that your characterization of God is flawed, but--sadly--reflects what many feel, in part because of the stranglehold of Judaizing "Christians", the allure of the huge amount of Jewish Scripture, an inability to accept that Jesus actually does NOT have a tome of queries & answers laid out for us...
