I Have Written a Short Story
PENSIONER DIES IN THE RESTAURANT OF HIS LOCAL MORRISONS (a leading UK hypermarket)
Looking forward to enjoying a pack of prawn sandwiches with side salad for just £2.39, with a pot of tea, Bill sat down at a free table in the restaurant at his local Morrisons, and prepared to tuck in.
The only problem was, he couldn't seem to open the cellophane packaging that separated him from his lunch. He was hungry, but no matter how hard he tugged at the wrapping with his shaky fingers, he couldn't split it. He began to get annoyed. He picked up his fork and began jabbing at the package. Still it resisted. Bill was losing patience. His stabs became wilder and wilder and he started muttering, and then swearing, his face getting redder and redder. He stood up, the better to attack. A wild swipe with the fork caused him to lose his balance, and over he went. Landing hard on the floor, the fork went into the underside of the wrist of his other hand. On the way down he grabbed at the table and upset the teapot. His head hit the floor with a crack. Scalding tea poured onto his face. Blood spurted from the veins in his wrist.
He was dead by the time the ambulance got there. Morrisons declined to comment on journalists' accusation that their packaging is practically inviolable without power tools
This hasn't happened yet, to my knowledge. But it could well. My wife had prawn sandwiches there this lunch time. It took persistent brute force to break into the pack.
When will some elderly person die? If not in the restaurant, then maybe in the kitchen at home, trying to get the cucumber out of its condom with a sharp knife that can so easily slip.
DO WE NEED ALL THIS PLASTIC WRAPPED ROUND THE FOOD WE BUY?
